Question #18: Where can I find American History resources?

This week's category is quite a broad one, but try to consider this in terms of school projects and what would be best for kids at various age levels to use. Suggestions for both hardcopy and online resources are encouraged. Please give us your thoughts!

  1. History Resource Center: U.S. is a good database.

  2. http://americanhistory.about.com/od/americanhistorytimelines

This is a great site. It gives you a day to day account of up to 150 years prior to the Revolution.

  3. The Grolier Online Passport database is a good source for American History information. The database contains information from America the Beautiful, Encyclopedia Americana, etc.

  4. The really great thing about the History Resource Center is that they have some "primary" sources available for many topics. At Highlands we have also added a label that says "primary source" to some of our history books that have original documents and letters. This has really assisted us because some history projects ask for primary sources and those can be difficult to find.

  5. I like to use the American Memory Project, a segment of the Library of Congress website, especially if the student is looking for primary source material.

  6. As far as Primary Sources go - if you type "Primary Sources" in Workflows and search by Series you will find non-fiction books that are Primary Sources. Also you can type "American War Library" and search by Series.

I would like to give credit to Curt Beadell for pointing that out to the staff at Pablo Creek. :)
