Question #22: Where can I find Christian Fiction?

For this week’s question, we look at a genre that is quickly becoming as popular as old mainstays like Mysteries and Science Fiction. Having personally come across patrons who are looking for books in this area, I created an “Inspirational” section during my time at Maxville and will soon enough be doing the same for Graham. But your branch may not have such a section, so how do we help patrons looking for these types of books? Please submit any sources you have for lists of authors, titles and series and just guides in general that would be of assistance. Please give us your thoughts!

Christian bookstores are great for Christian fiction and Jacksonville host a wide variety of these stores. Some of the big churches have their own gift shop / book store; so there is no shortage of Christian fiction books and videos in the Jacksonville area or anywhere for that matter.

  2. I have only a couple of items to add, but based on your use of the word “Inspirational” following a question about Christian fiction, I think it is appropriate to add a couple of other thoughts. While Christian fiction can certainly provide inspiration to many people, I am sure you will agree that it can provide much more. I think you will also agree that by no means do all inspirational books come from Christian fiction. I suspect you are already aware of this and may even include items in your Inspiration displays, but I just wanted to mention Christian non-fiction includes many inspirational books as well, including many contemporary ones in the 248.8 area. Also, in non-fiction general area, 158, there are many books to assist people find inspiration from books that are not specifically Christian. - R. Cook

  3. We have also pulled out the most popular "inspirational" authors into a display section. This is very popular. Two things I would like to see: 1. Display materials being exempt from the floating collection. 2. A bookmark or a half sheet handout with the most popular inspirational authors. We don't have room yet to pull out all of the titles we want and it would be good to have a handout for people looking for more.

  4. There are several ways to find Christian fiction. One, look at both the book reviews and the ads in Charisma and Christianity Today. Get on the mailing list of publishers that publish Christian fiction (I would just give your title rather than a name, because when you get on a mailing list you are on it.) Besides your replacement might like to know as well. The Baptist have a large number of church libriaries some they may provide some input. Also, there is CASLA (Church and Synagogue Library Association) they put out a monthly periodical just like ALA only not as fancy. - P. Votaw

  6. One other thing about “Christian fiction” is that it has most of the genres of fiction; like Christian mysteries, romance, western, etc. So check your customer about
What sub genres they like. - P. Votaw
