This week's question is particularly important in terms of sources. Out of all the subject a person could Google information on, medical advice is possibly the most dicey. So beyond the obvious volumes in the 610's, and beyond pointing folks to Medline Plus, what are some other good reliable sources you know of that would be great to include in the answer to this week's question? Please give us your thoughts!

I like the Mayo Clinic's website http://www.mayoclinic.com/
ReplyDeletehttp://medlineplus.gov/
ReplyDeleteMedlineplus, a free database compared with medline database, "a goldmine of good health information from the world's largest medical library, the National Library of Medicine."
I like to regularly review two websites maintained by members of the Medical Library Association for their recommendations:
ReplyDeleteThe MLA has a list of "top ten" websites for consumers at http://www.mlanet.org/resources/medspeak/topten.html
Once you get through those 10, CAPHIS (Consumer & Patient Health Information Section of MLA) also maintains a list of their top 100 health websites at http://caphis.mlanet.org/consumer/index.html. It expands upon the "top ten" and is divided into different categories, such as General Health, Women's Health, Men's Health, etc.
I have found both of these websites to be great places to start when I'm not sure where to look for medical and/or consumer health information.
It's easy to get overwhelmed by all the websites with medical information which are out there.

Another website that I have found helpful is http://www.webmd.com
ReplyDeleteI really like the NIH website for medical info--they give basic background on the disease or condition, links to research, and info on clinical trials. www.nih.gov
ReplyDeleteContains wonderful and useful messages. I have read most of them and learn a lot from them.
