Question #39: Where can I find obituaries and other Genealogy resources?

This week rounds out our "Special Collections" subject list. Obviously, those that are serious about researching their family tree would want to start off on the fourth floor of Main, but what else is there available online? And, as always, those folks from the fourth floor are encouraged to chime in and crow about their own resources. Please give us your thoughts!

  1. Ancestry is pretty good for things like this. That database has lots of info, including obituaries, the Social Security death index and others. For recent obituaries America's Obituaries & Death Notices from Newsbank has useful stuff. There are also a ton of online resources from geneology hobbyists. I found that the best resource is interviewing my older relatives. That is the place to start.

  3. There are five libraries that subscribe to a periodical called "Family Tree Magazine" which is a Genealogy resource publication. The libraries are PCR, Main, Mandarin, Southeast, University Park, and West Regional.

  4. Staff should be aware of the resources available on the Genealogy Home Page http://jpl.coj.net/coll/gen/index.html, accessible from the Special Collections sections, as well as the links on the Genealogy Recommended Websites http://jpl.coj.net/res/sites/genealogy.html
Both have great, vetted, sites for beginners as well as individuals who are ready for the next step. Don't forget about the Latter Day Saints Family History catalog, http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp
The Main Library has a fairly complete index of deaths that appeared in the Florida Times Union from 1895 to 1997, however it's in print, so customers either need to call or come in to see if the notice exists.

  5. I have found for Jacksonville Obituaries a good place to start is Jacksonville.com, I have used that site a few times, but when I needed it for an out of state Obituary years ago, I just went to google and typed in: Obituary of Lowell Bunker and gave me a cite where his obituary was at.
