Question #24: Where can I find peer-reviewed articles and journals?

Here we get into a more academic need than we are usually used to in the public library, yet there are those students from local colleges (and sometimes from high schools) that require serious sources for their assignments. How do you go about showing them where the peer-reviewed journals and how to identify them? Please give us your thoughts!

  1. One source which is frequntly overlooked is the DOAH, or Directory of Open Access Journals at http://www.doaj.org/. Take a look if you haven't used this lately, because the list of titles is growing exponentially. Open access is definitely the wave of the future!

  2. That should have read DOAJ, not DOAH, although the web address is correct -- that will teach me to post something at the information desk thinking it's quiet and then all of a sudden it's not!

Also, I should add that, although certain subject areas are better covered than others in the DOAJ, it's usually worth taking a look just to check, due to the ease of using open access resources.

  3. An option for Peer-Reviewed articles would be to try PROQUEST DATABASE, TYPE IN YOUR TOPIC, AND BE SURE TO SELECT PEER-REVIEW IN THE SMALL BOX, THEN SEARCH...THIS SHOULD GET YOU WHERE YOU ARE GOING.
