Question #40: Where can I find automobile repair manuals and information?

We're down to the final three of our 42 Project, and this week we tackle automobile reference questions. Obviously, we have Chilton and Motor manuals. We also have the superb Automobile Repair Reference Center database. But what else is available to people online? Please give us your thoughts!

  1. We get this question a lot, but I rarely turn to the Internet. Usually the Chilton's suffice and sometimes I can talk the customer into looking at the Auto Reference Center database. If the customer has a very specific request and it is not too many pages we can print the intructions right from the database. I am curious as to what other folks are using.

  2. Many of our customers go straight to the Chilton's section. If they can't find what they want, I walk them through the Auto Reference Center and if they have internet access at home, they seem satisfied. Don't assume that older men will be reluctant to use the online database. It's a well set up site and almost everyone I've showed it to has felt comfortable with it. (This is a rare case where the database might be easier to use than the book).

  3. I don't that many questions about that in my dept, but when that does come up, I refer them to the Auto Reference Center database. They have no problems figuring out the database to find what they need!
